In New York, the UN from 10 March 2020 will be closed for visitors from outside and preparing to work remotely. The decision was agreed internally and announced this morning, a week after the Paris-based headquarters of the Palais des Nations closed down due to the corona virus outbreak.
From New York, correspondent Carie Nooten adds more details:
«Diplomats were told in the morning that, from tonight, outside visitors would not be allowed to enter the UN headquarters building, to try to stop the spread of corona virus, and New York state had also declared a state of emergency.
A few hours before meeting again this morning, the 193 member countries received an email stating that the United Nations entered phase 1, that is, the preparation phase of the emergency plan. The plan, defined by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, envisages the activities of each unit so that UN staff can work remotely.
Since yesterday, the disinfection of UN buildings has doubled, and employees from at-risk areas are asked to isolate themselves.
Today officials are recommended to work at home three days a week, and the remaining two days at UN headquarters. Fifteen Security Council members even tested the remote way last night, so they could hold meetings and vote from other places in case of force majeure. During its 75-year presence, the Security Council has never been so stymied that it was impossible to meet.
Is the US president at risk of infection?
The threat from the new strain of corona virus is approaching the White House and Donald Trump: he has approached five members of Congress at risk of infection and now these congressmen and congressmen are now voluntarily quarantining. However, the US president has never tested it.
Mr. Trump announced that there would be large-scale measures to support the US economy against the impact of the corona virus disease. President Trump invites major US banks to meet at the White House tomorrow. Wall Street stock market yesterday plunged the hardest since 11 years, but Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin confirmed the US economy is still the most stable in the world.
